Silvano Avanzini. Satira e Pittura (Satire and Painting) is a solo exhibition curated by Antonella Serafini on the two souls of the painter and float designer, one of the most acute interpreters of political satire, which is key to the identity of the Viareggio Carnival, but also an intimate and nostalgic painter.
With more than fifty allegorical floats created and nine first prizes won, Avanzini was a leading figure in the Viareggio Carnival from the early 1950s to the dawn of the new millennium. However, he also had another long creative career, of a totally different but equally important nature, that of intimate and private painting. These are small works in soft, muted colours, where the gaze lingers on local, familiar and somehow reassuring landscapes, reflecting a melancholic dimension, an existential aspect perhaps derived from an awareness of how brutal the world was, as declared with scathing satire in the floats.
The collection brings together the two souls of Silvano Avanzini, whose creativity is the result of the same vision of the world, on the one hand mocked and laid bare with satire and on the other nostalgically loved.
The exhibition is open from Saturday 6 September to Sunday 12 October. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 3 pm to 7 pm.
