On 20 May, the most important and famous cycling race in Italy returns to the city, an individual time trial from Lucca to Pisa that promises to be spectacular and full of charm, with the cyclists called upon to cover the approximately 30 kilometres of the trial.

After the start in the historic centre, from Piazza Napoleone, the riders will climb the scenic Walls to complete half a lap of the tree-lined circle (as in the 1984 prologue) and then in the direction of Pisa, passing through the Forum and San Giuliano Terme, and through a route that winds through the gentle Tuscan countryside, skirting the Medici aqueduct and arriving in Piazza dei Miracoli, joining two symbolic places known throughout the world as the Walls and the Leaning Tower.

From a technical point of view, the stage is classified as a very fast time trial with a small intermediate climb (not classified as a GPM) that roughly replicates the 1977 time trial won by Knut Knudsen.

The route: the start will be in Piazza Napoleone and then reach the Caffè delle Mura and walk clockwise through the baluardi San Paolino, San Donato, San Frediano and San Salvatore before descending to the Casa del Boia. From there, the athletes will walk along Via dei Bacchettoni out of Porta Elisa, Piazzale Don Aldo Mei, Viale Cadorna, Via di Tiglio, Via Ingrellini, then Via di Mugnano, Via Vitali, the motorway bridge, Sorbano del Giudice, Polo Fiere, Via di Vitricaia to the junction with Via per Pisa, Pontetetto, Massa Pisana, Santa Maria del Giudice, San Giuliano Terme, then turn left for Asciano and finally reach Pisa.

Rich and interesting, it's the programme of Waiting for the Giro initiatives and side events that will involve the city and territory in the run-up to 20 May to celebrate the return of the pink race.
