Every year, on the first Sunday after Easter, Lucca celebrates Freedom Day, which commemorates the moment when, in April 1369, the people of Lucca regained their coveted independence, after 40 years of foreign domination, at the hands of Emperor Charles IV of Bohemia.

On Sunday 7 April, Freedom Day, Piazza San Martino will host the official celebrations starting at 10.30 a.m., with the solemn Mass, the presentation of gonfalons and performances by historical groups.

In the afternoon, at 3.30 p.m., there will be a double crossbow challenge with the Torneo della Libertà (Liberty Tournament), organised by the Compagnia Balestrieri on the bastions of the San Pietro bastion, and the Disfida della Libertà (Liberty Challenge), organised by the Contrade San Paolino on the bastion of the same name.

The day will end in Piazza Napoleone at 4 p.m. with the Parata della liberà (Freedom Parade), a flag show and the exhibition of musicians from the Compagnia Sbandieratori e Musici della Città di Lucca.
