Events

Every year, after Easter, Lucca celebrates the Festival of Freedom, which commemorates the moment in April 1369 when the people of Lucca regained their long-awaited independence, thanks to Emperor Charles IV of Bohemia, after 40 years of foreign rule.

From 7 to 12 April, a packed programme of cultural events and historical re-enactments will mark the occasion with a host of activities.

There will be plenty of opportunities for cultural exploration and historical re-enactments.

Friday 10 
9.00 pm – San Paolino bastion barracks | 1370, Lucca and the Festival of Freedom. Lecture by Daniele Zucconi.

Saturday 11 
5.00 pm – San Martino bastion | The ‘Gazzarra della Libertà’, a display of historical artillery organised by Historica Lucense.

Sunday 12 – Festival of Freedom
10.30 am – Cathedral of San Martino | Celebrations of Freedom, 
Solemn Mass followed by the traditional ceremony for the presentation of the district banners and a performance by historical groups.
3.30 pm – San Pietro Bastion stands | Tournament of Freedom organised by the Compagnia Balestrieri Lucca 
3.30 pm – San Paolino Bastion | Challenge of Freedom organised by the Contrade San Paolino
4.00 pm - Piazza Napoleone | Parade of Freedom with spectacular performances by the City of Lucca’s flag-wavers and musicians.
4.30 pm - Cred in Via Sant’Andrea | Splendours at Court, lectures and historical dances organised by Lo Studiorum.
