The presence of Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister, on the throne of the Principality of Lucca and Piombino between 1805 and 1814 brought about rapid modernisation in many areas of Lucca's society, economy and culture, including botany, agronomy, landscaping and horticulture.
From Wednesday 30 April to Sunday 27 July, Princess Elisa's ‘green’ revolution in Lucca, an exhibition and three conferences in the basement of the Baluardo Regolo within the Botanical Gardens of Lucca.
The themes of the exhibition range from Napoleon, Elisa and the Enlightenment, to Paris as the capital of science, to the expedition to Australia by explorer and naturalist Nicolas Baudin, to Josephine de Beauharnais' passion for flowers and animals, to florimania.
