Claudio Barontini. Uno sguardo is a photographic exhibition featuring iconic portraits from around the world and shots from the Lucca area, with a significant selection of black-and-white photographs that the artist has taken, throughout his career, of some of the most celebrated figures on the international scene in culture, cinema, fashion and entertainment.
On display from 29 August to 26 September 2026 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni are the historic portraits that have helped define the photographer’s artistic identity: images characterised by intensity, formal composition and the ability to convey the subject’s personality through a rigorous black-and-white aesthetic; subjects include Patti Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Franco Zeffirelli, King Charles III, Susan Sarandon, Vittorio Gassman, Sylvester Stallone and Lina Wertmüller.
Alongside a mix of previously unpublished photographs and others already featured in published works, the exhibition also presents a series of ‘impressions’ taken by the artist whilst travelling between Liverpool and New York, the Côte d’Azur and the scenic beauty of the Italian peninsula.
There is also a tribute to the Lucca area. A collection of portraits of artists and personalities taken in the Lucca area – Mario Monicelli, Nicole Kidman, Fernando Botero, Gabriella Ferri – and some photos from the ‘flâneur’ series taken in Viareggio, Pietrasanta, Torre del Lago and the historic centre of Lucca.
The common thread running through the exhibition is the recognisable and consistent stylistic signature of Claudio Barontini, whose keen eye for detail, fragments of reality and psychological exploration aims to create an intimate and ever-changing dialogue between the photographer, the subject and the viewer. The artistic documentary *Kemp-Barontini: Drawings and Pictures* (2020), directed by Cristiana Cerrini and produced by Lucia Manganaro Morelli, will be screened in the exhibition galleries.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 3.00 pm to 7.00 pm. The opening takes place on Saturday 29 August at 6.30 pm.
